Synopsis:
Rebels of the Neon God (Taiwanese: Ch'ing shaonien ne cha, literally Teenaged Nezha) is a 1992 Taiwanese film by Tsai Ming-liang. It is his first full-length film. It tells two stories of Taipei youth. One details alienated buxiban student Hsiao Kang (Lee Kang-sheng) and his troubled interactions with his family. The other shows two petty hoods, Ah Tze and Ah Bing, along with Ah Kuei, Tze's erstwhile girlfriend. An idle act of violence brings the two groups into collision, and an act of revenge at the end completes the circle. It is a story of troubled youth, dissatisfaction, and the alienating effect of urban life.

Much of Rebels of the Neon God is filmed in various arcades and malls in Taipei and on the streets of the city with hand-held cameras. It is filmed in a much more naturalistic manner than some of Tsai's later work.

Taiwan, Xiao-kang, a young man in his early 20s, lives with his parents in near silence. He is plagued by severe neck pain. His father is bedeviled by water first leaking into his bedroom and then flooding the apartment; rain is incessant. Xiao-kang’s mother is overcome by sexual longing for her son, sometimes making seemingly incestuous overtures. They try virtually every intervention for Xiao-kang’s neck: Western medicine, a chiropractor, acupuncture, an herbal doctor, and a faith healer, Master Liu. Are the family’s silent dynamics and Xiao-kang’s neck pain connected? And what about the body floating in the Tamsui River: is everything dead?

A series of films about faith and belief will be screened at UP’s Cine Adarna on February 27… but these films will leave you with more questions than answers.

The Filipino Freethinkers Film Festival is the first film fest in the Philippines intended to challenge your thinking about belief, faith, and reason.

The films include a bittersweet one-woman show by a former Saturday Night Live cast member, a documentary exploring the link between religion and terrorism, and a couple of short films originally screened at the American Atheist Film Festival.

“Most of us don’t question our faith or religion at all,” says Ryan Tani, president of the Filipino Freethinkers. “But when religion increasingly conflicts with reason in society, we need a public discussion of the merits of faith. Especially we Filipinos, who live under laws shaped by the Catholic Church whether we’re Catholic or not.

“Showing films that question that assumption, that faith is always a good thing… I think that’s a really important first step to get the debate going,” says Tani.

The films screened during the Filipino Freethinkers Film Festival are intended to reach out to both the religious and the irreligious, questioning long-cherished assumptions on both sides of the debate.

Letting Go of God, a one-woman show by Saturday Night Live alumna Julia Sweeney, is a funny yet touching tale of Sweeney’s conflict with the Catholic faith of her childhood. The story (with its surprising conclusion) is told in an upbeat monologue style that the New York Times called “searing and bracingly funny”.

Root of All Evil? is biologist Richard Dawkins’ look at how religious faith serves as a primary motivator for evil in today’s modern world. Throughout the two-part film, we see Dawkins taking on religious fanatics of all stripes, including disgraced pastor Ted Haggard, and building the case for humanity being better off without faith.

Fun for Heretics showcases bits of classic comedy, shocking songs and searing rants from all around the world, with clips from George Carlin, Monty Python, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Woody Allen, Roy Zimmerman, Marcus Brigstocke, Edward Current, and many more.

Imagine No Religion blends the funny and the serious to tackle the conflict between faith and reason. The film includes excerpts from the late Theo Van Gogh & Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s “Submission” and Lisa Seidenberg’s moving memorial to 9/11, “In the Name of God.”

The Filipino Freethinkers Film Festival is on for one day only, on February 27, at Cine Adarna from 1pm to 8pm. Admission is free.
FILM REVIEWS:

“Soriano’s full-length feature debut—which examines the dynamics of sin and forgiveness in a family setting—deserves to be seen for the relevant themes it tackles and the significant lessons it imparts.” – Rito Asilo, Philippine Daily Inquirer

Although it espouses Christian values, having been produced by the Jubilee Evangelical Church’s Youth for Christ ministry in celebration of its 10th anniversary, “A Journey Home” may also inspire other religious or non-religious groups that honor family and promote forgiveness.” – Jocelyn Valle, Manila Bulletin

– Allan Diones, Abante Tonite

“Toni Gonzaga shows off her versatility. Her forte may be hosting and doing comedies, but she can also do drama. She is convincing as the good-hearted wife who has nothing but love for her husband and family.” – Fidel Antonio Medel, Pep.Ph

– Tonee Coraza, Taliba

“Watching the film “A Journey Home” is like like a journey into the hearts of men. We cannot forgive people who are asking for our forgiveness. We always want to move on. We always want to show to them that they deseve what they get now. But I believe, the hearts of men are born with goodness, with sensitivity and with kindness. I am digging my way in, and I know, I am winning. Because, eversince I was young, I’ve always wanted my life to end as I journey HOME.” – Robert Silverio

Based on a novel by Lorenzo Silva, this movie deals with the unusual and tragic relationship between a frustrated businessman and a 14-year-old student. After crashing into the rear of the car in front of him, Pablo Lopez starts arguing with the other driver, Sonsoles, who finally files for an injury claim against him. Therefore, the angry manager starts harassing her and observes her younger sister Maria in her schoolyard. When he gets to know the intelligent girl, his perception of life is changed totally, but their friendship leads into a tragedy…

A rural drama set in Obaba, a mythical region in northern Spain, where a young filmmaker struggled to capture the feel of the area, which in turn leads to a wealth of self-discovery. Twenty-five-year-old Lourdes decides to travel with her video camera to Obaba, a small town in the Basque Country, to record the comings and goings of its residents as part of a class assignment. Lourdes begins to dig into the town’s past to try to understand its present. However, the more she digs, the more it seems that strange and magical things are happening in Obaba; things that may be related to the odd green lizards that plague the townspeople – and allegedly feed on their brains. She attempts to record the passage of time with her camera, but quickly learns that life’s mysteries are impossible to define or explain and that even attempts to capture them can get in the way of experiencing true wonder.
